HOW DOES IT WORK?

Ask.fm is a service that gives people the chance to ask and answer all types of questions. You can use it as a registered user or anonymously. Your answers can be in video format as well as the usual text format, and it’s cool because you can also connect it to your Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr accounts. It is very easy to use: your questions can be for a specific person, or you can post it publicly, so that all users can answer them. Some popular questions are: Who’s going to the One Direction concert this weekend? What’s your favourite Katy Perry song? What would you do if you found a {tip text=" carteira" title=" wallet "} wallet {/tip} with $500 in it? {tip text=" e assim por diante" title=" And so on "} And so on {/tip}. The problem is that you can also find {tip text=" menos agradáveis" title=" less pleasant "} less pleasant {/tip} questions and very bad answers…

CYBER BULLIES

As on many other sites, a lot of sexualized, abusive and bullying posts are present on ask.fm, making young and weak teenagers an {tip text=" alvo fácil" title=" easy target "} easy target {/tip}. Ask.fm guarantees anonymity, so some people have abused their {tip text=" direito " title=" “right”]} “right” {/tip} to express themselves. Ask.fm has become a way for teenagers to exchange insults and {tip text=" ameaças " title=" threats "} threats {/tip}, and this has had very serious consequences.

SUICIDES

In 2012 and 2013 a few teenagers in different parts of the world committed suicide after being cyberbullied on this site. A recent case was Hannah Smith, a 14-year-old girl who killed herself last August because {tip text=" não conseguia mais suportar" title=" she could no longer stand "} she could no longer stand {/tip} the messages she was getting.

CONTROL

The site has a kind of control system: it is possible to report inappropriate content on ask.fm, and you do not need to be a user to do this. When you move your mouse over any post, you can see an option to “like” the post, but you can also find an {tip text=" seta, flecha" title=" arrow "} arrow {/tip} which permits you to report a post. Users can also remove any questions from their own profile by clicking on {tip text=" o “x” no canto ao alto à direita" title=" the cross in the top right-hand corner "} the cross in the top right-hand corner {/tip} of every question and answer.

BE CAREFUL!

Social networking can be a lot of fun as well as useful! You can make friends with people from many different countries, and learn about other cultures, discover new music, practice the language you are studying, but you need to remember that {tip text="você precisa ficar atento" title=" you must be careful "} you must be careful {/tip} who you talk to. If you are using ask.fm and someone contacts you, using sexual comments, or comments that you find bullying or {tip text=" assédio" title=" harassing "} harassing {/tip}, report them and block them. Don’t answer! If you ever feel threatened, ask for help!
