HOW DOES IT WORK?
As on many other sites, a lot of sexualized, abusive and bullying posts are present on ask.fm, making young and weak teenagers an easy target . Ask.fm guarantees anonymity, so some people have abused their “right” to express themselves. Ask.fm has become a way for teenagers to exchange insults and threats , and this has had very serious consequences.
In 2012 and 2013 a few teenagers in different parts of the world committed suicide after being cyberbullied on this site. A recent case was Hannah Smith, a 14-year-old girl who killed herself last August because she could no longer stand the messages she was getting.
The site has a kind of control system: it is possible to report inappropriate content on ask.fm, and you do not need to be a user to do this. When you move your mouse over any post, you can see an option to “like” the post, but you can also find an arrow which permits you to report a post. Users can also remove any questions from their own profile by clicking on the cross in the top right-hand corner of every question and answer.
Social networking can be a lot of fun as well as useful! You can make friends with people from many different countries, and learn about other cultures, discover new music, practice the language you are studying, but you need to remember that you must be careful who you talk to. If you are using ask.fm and someone contacts you, using sexual comments, or comments that you find bullying or harassing , report them and block them. Don’t answer! If you ever feel threatened, ask for help!
