334 - REESE WITHERSPOON GOES WILD

Matéria do mês.
By Jordan Riefe

MOVIES

Reese Witherspoon is both the producer and the star of Wild. The film is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, a French Canadian best known for Dallas Buyers Club, while British author Nick Hornby wrote the screenplay . It is based on the best-selling memoir by Cheryl Strayed, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. It tells the story of a woman who, after the death of her much loved mother, played by Laura Dern, a divorce and a history of drug abuse, decides to walk a thousand miles. As Reese Witherspoon says, it was an emotionally intense role:

REESE WITHERSPOON
(Standard american accent)

I think I cried a lot. I think I laid on my kitchen floor and cried a lot and then I think (at) a certain point you just wake up and you go, “I don’t want to feel like this any more,” and then you figure your own shit out, you know, but no one’s going to figure it out for you.

SELF-DISCOVERY

Reese Witherspoon’s film career took off in 2001 with Legally Blonde . As someone famous for having played a “ dumb blonde,” starring in a feminist story of a woman’s journey of self-discovery was certainly a challenge :

REESE WITHERSPOON

And some part of you has to be like, “I don’t care how people feel about it ‘cause this could have been a disaster for me! People could have laughed, they could have thought it was ridiculous, but I’ve been so lucky that people have been so... open-minded about it. But I think, you know, as you get older, your audience gets older too, you know. These aren’t the little girls I grew up making movies for, you know, you grow and you change and, if you’re willing to be open and vulnerable and show everybody how you really feel, I think it’s... there’s a lot of compassion in this movie.

MAYBE OK IS ENOUGH

And in spite of its painful subject matter, Wild does have a positive message:

REESE WITHERSPOON

She has no money, she has no opportunities, she has no mother, no father. I think a lot of people can relate to that . And I love the part where she says, “ I have two nickels to my name and I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself. I don’t know how I’m going to reenter the world.” But she’s going to try. And I love that she ends up the movie with nothing. She doesn’t have any money, or a man, or a car, or a job, or a mother or a father, anyone to go home to or... but it’s happy, you feel happy at the end, you know: she’s going to be OK, and maybe OK is enough.

explaing

And you go. “E você diz”. Com frequência o verbo to go é utilizado, em inglês, para substituir to say (ou seja, “dizer”). De qualquer forma é uma expressão utilizada em contextos informais e não em um documento escrito.

You figure your own shit out. “Você resolve os seus próprios problemas”. Se o verbo to go no lugar de to say é uma gíria, esta aqui é uma “supergíria”! Shit (literalmente “merda”) é um slang utilizado para dizer “coisa”; inicialmente vindo do contexto afro-americano, esse uso do termo já é generalizado. Some part of you has to be like. “Uma parte de você deve dizer”.

To be like é mais um modo de dizer to say (ou seja, “dizer”). E de novo é uma frase que pode ser utilizada no inglês falado, mas não cai bem no inglês escrito.
