289 - Julian Lennon

Julian Lennon is the son of John Lennon. He is also a singer, but his career has been less successful. He is now 48 and he lives a quiet life.

John Lennon had a difficult childhood. His parents abandoned him and he lived with his Aunt Mimi. When John Lennon became a father he was not very good. Julian was born in 1963. This was at the time of “Beatlemania”: John’s wife, Cynthia – and their son – were a secret. When little Julian went to school he had a friend called Lucy. He drew a picture of her called “Lucy in the Sky.” His father liked the picture and wrote a song: “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.” John divorced Cynthia when he met Yoko Ono. Julian was very sad. Paul McCartney comforted him. He wrote a song for him: the title was “Hey Jules,” but he changed it to “Hey Jude.”

John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved to New York. John rarely saw his son, who lived in England with Cynthia. In the 1970s John had an affair with May Pang: May was friendly with Cynthia and John spent more time with Julian. But John went back to Yoko and had another son with her: Sean Lennon was born in 1975.
The assassination of John Lennon in 1980 was a traumatic event for everyone. It was very traumatic for Julian, who didn’t really know his father.

Later he became a professional singer and his 1984 album, Valotte, went platinum. He released more albums in the 1980s and 1990s. Later he owned a restaurant in Majorca. He also works as an artist, but they say he will release a new album this year, called Everything Changes. In 2009 Julian recorded a song called “Lucy.” It was for Lucy Vodden, the little girl in the “Lucy in the Sky” picture. Lucy died in 2009.
